Revision Music & Midnight Shift Dig Up The Shared Roots Of Jungle & Techno In This Gig

In the grand scheme of things, there is little that divides the various subcommunities of electronic dance music. Just like how you can’t separate house from disco or EBM from synth-pop, you can’t deny the foundational links between techno and jungle. Both rose to popularity from the ascent of rave and hardcore music in the early ’90s, eventually branching out into their own seemingly disparate yet connected paths. Over 30 years later (and you’ll witness this at local parties these days amongst the young’uns) these lines have become blurrier with the tendency to pigeonhole genres becoming increasingly redundant. Revision Music and Midnight Shift have kept tabs on this, and that’s why their union at this upcoming event is a match made in party heaven.

The two promotion entities should need no prior introduction, but here’s a crash course for your convenience. Headed by Nez Senja AKA Helios XL, Revision Music traverses the plains of bass, jungle and left-field techno and is best known for its signature Sub City series. And then you have Midnight Shift, the Berlin-based Singapore-born record label that’s been shoving the limits of techno, avant-garde electronica and other oddities from the likes of Prequel, dBridge and Om Unit since its birth in 2012. Unlike immovable objects, the two powerhouses converge and prove that they can coexist in the same space, and it’s set to be an educative and frenzied double whammy that will recontextualise the way you know dance music.

Merging for one night only on 2 December, Revision Music and Midnight Shift will be taking over the Tuff Club party pad with their hardest hitters in tow. Representing Revision are bossman Helios XL and Gahmen who will bridge the worlds of techno and hardcore with jungle and drum & bass with dexterity. And from Midnight Shift, you have the resident crew of Aya, Basil and Haan whose repertoire of techno ranges from swift industrial cuts to eclectic, norm-pushing numbers. As if this tag-team affair couldn’t get any better, this event is also supported by HBN from Last Saturdays, and Vix who’s been a fledgling shooting star in the techno circuit.

“This party explores a range of electronic music and dance, which aligns with Midnight Shift’s recent releases,” shares Haan and Nez Senja about the collaboration. “The full local lineup will showcase the abundant talent found in Singapore that has kept our ears perked up through their diverse and unique selections.”

Even if you’re still not convinced that techno and jungle fit together, that’s okay. Let these headmasters take you to school.
