Often, the selections of DJs answer a brief based on the event or location they’re playing. And eventually, the likelihood of listeners developing a fixed perception of said DJs is high. Inadvertently (and sometimes accidentally), DJs end up being pigeonholed into ‘this sound’ and ‘that style’. But Parallel Playground, a new initiative collectively founded by advocates of the scene, plans to shatter that impression. Parallel Playground promises a new lens through which you’ll see an unexpected side of your favourite local DJs; rarities they never get to play, secret weapons waiting to be unsheathed, and self-indulgent guilty pleasures that’s all fair game.
For its debut sesh on 7 February at Node – that recently came to light as the new HQ for Shutter Rhythms – Parallel Playground sets the stage for a downtempo journey launching early at 5pm till 10pm. And in the cockpit is a crew of seasoned DJs who are happy to dig deep and express themselves differently. Scheduled for flight is the ever-eclectic Bongomann whose ‘super-enjoying’ curatorial depth knows no bounds. He’ll be joined by Revision Music duo, Halia and RTJ, who will go B2B for a melding of minds and tastes as they reel you in. There’s a faint sense of mystery as to where all this will lead, but it’s a destination that’s definitely piquing curiosity.
