Sunda Festival: The Inaugural Camping Music Event Reveals Its Venue & First-Wave Lineup

How ‘campy’ do you like your raves? There are few feelings in the world as surreal as emerging from your tent and charging straight into a music festival. Although the notion of camping isn’t new in nature-deprived Singapore, the idea of camping within a festival has been generally unthought of – until now. Sunda Festival has arrived to turn this novel desire into a tangible reality, promising a two-day lifestyle jamboree situated in the extreme Northwest of the island at Sarimbun Scout Camp. Just like their tents, it’s a decent pitch, one that’s already begun to pick up traction amongst avid ticket-grabbers.

The fact that tickets have begun to fly off the figurative shelves is remarkable, especially considering that sales began before the lineup had been announced. But what’s backing the credibility of Sunda Festival is its team, comprising established day party collective (and scene darlings) Ice Cream Sundays, and Florian Melinette who runs Hong Kong’s Shi Fu Miz Festival and FuFu Creative. This is hardly the first rodeo together between the two entities, who teamed up in 2019 for ICS’ sophomore edition of its Haw Par Thrilla series. On Sunda, their next collaboration goes bigger, delivering a full-fledged programme encompassing DJs and live acts from the region.

We’re fortunate to have first dibs on the first wave of Sunda’s eclectic lineup, sweeping across an expanse of genres that will soundtrack three stages on festival grounds. Highlights include the techno explorations of Savage resident Di Linh (Vietnam), the boogie-tuned cuts of Midnight Runners’ Munir (Indonesia), the disco treasures of Xes Xes Loveseat (Malaysia), and the cosmic voyages of Wax’o Paradiso (Australia). Live acts form part of the programme too, and you can expect these from the atmospheric expeditions of Chalo (Thailand), the free-form experiments of Fraktal (Indonesia) and the house escapades of Kuniyuki (Japan).

As promoted, Singapore’s own acts get their time to shine at Sunda as well. Darker Than Wax’s honcho duo, Dean Chew and Kaye, are lined up for more hybrid antics between beats and sax. You have the psychedelic expertise of Jonathan Kusuma, the jungle-shooting artillery of Helios XL, the surreal auras of Yadin Moha and the upbeat gusts of The Weatherman. The transcendent electronic hymns of Mantravine also have a spot. And naturally, you have a b2b performance between Sunda’s hosts, MLCH (FuFu) and the cream team of Ice Cream Sundays.

More announcements of next-wave acts, fringe activities and camping deets are expected in the coming weeks, so do stay tuned in to this frequency. In the meantime, have a look at these preview shots of the Sunda playground.
