SquareRoom: If You Love Your Mambo Jambo, This Nostalgic Pop-Up Party Is For You

If you’re well-versed with all the synchronised hand choreography of “Bizarre Love Triangle”, “Summer Rain” and “Love In The First Degree”, then chances are, you were part of the Mambo Jambo phenomenon. And if you’re thinking, “I didn’t know there were New Order dance moves,” then you’re probably a couple of generations too early. Love it or hate it, Mambo Jambo fever was a defining part of Singapore’s nightlife culture, pairing ’80s and ’90s anthems with dancefloor aerobics that would unite nostalgia-loving fanatics like an Aces Day workout. Admit it, you must know a move or two.

Now, there’s an upcoming event called SquareRoom that’s celebrating the spirit of Mambo Jambo, what many have revered as a gateway party for first-time clubbers. Except this time it’s not in the club, but happening at the newly revamped D’Marquee @ Downtown East. For one night only on 23 August, the space transforms into a time capsule for Mambo zealots and partygoers looking for a change of scenery.

While not a Zouk-affiliated event, SquareRoom stays authentic with some very special cameos. Aside from having renowned DJs Aldrin and Leonard T on the decks – titans of a cherished era – this event will even feature some of the original Mambo dancers, who many might argue are the star attractions. They’ll be there to rally the Mambo masses, or teach you a thing or two if you’ve never popped your Mambo cherry. The trick to enjoying Mambo is simply leaving your ego at the door and shamelessly assimilate, one cheesy move at a time. And if not, you can count on the event’s 1-for-1 jug promos and costume contents to shake you loose. Now who’s ready for a flashback?
