While disco fever was indeed a dominant force in the West, there was a wave of equally boogilicious tunage that spread like wildfire in this part of the world. From swingin’ Singaporean a-go-go to Chinese mambo that would make you yell “jajambo”, these golden oldies immortalised the sound of a generation that continues to be revered today, especially amongst vintage-chasing vinyl hunters in search of these dusty treasures. Aficionados in this niche trove, Tiko Disko is a group that’s devoted to this quest, and it’s been sharing the gifts of its hunts with the local music scene for the last seven years.

Come 11 October, the unit will be embarking on an event called Seven Year Tale (Story Of Tiko Disko). Led by its discerning chieftain, Tiko Jackson (who you also might know as KiDG from Eatmepoptart) the live-stream will reveal the origin and ongoing journey of Tiko Disko during these last seven years, while dishing out a soundtrack of groovy, hooky nostalgia that will satisfy that dancing itch – whether you’re wearing your disco pants, or no pants at all.

Tiko Disko has been a seasoned treasure of the scene, conceptualised by the duo of Tiko Jackson and Sir Chico Montagut to put out what they affectionately dub “Jizz Funk and Jacuzzi Soul”, their take on Asian funk, sultry disco and adult-oriented rock. It’s music that’s a hodgepodge of Asian languages from Hokkien to Malay, with vibes ranging from peppy to psychedelic. A shimmy down music’s Memory Lane, the jaunts of Tiko Disko are escapades that are oddly educational and endearingly campy, and full of pride for the long-lost music that can be found in our Asian backyard.
