If the team behind spikyfruits can be trusted, this is no joke. On 1 April 2022, the local indie label will be throwing its first live gig that marks the debut of its Fruit Basket series.

Launched in late 2021, spikyfruits is the sister imprint of chief label, Where Are The Fruits, which was founded by Tan Peng Sing who’s best known as the lead guitarist of M1LDL1FE. While WATF now focuses more on pop-centric acts like Marian Carmel, lewloh and Foxela, spikyfruits carries the weight of musicians who prefer to simmer in the underground. BGourd, Don Aaron and Coming Up Roses are just some of the alumni who’ve had releases on the imprint over the months, and that pool of talent is only set to grow as its management team keep their sharp eyes on the radar.

For the inaugural edition of Fruit Basket, spikyfruits is organising it at *SCAPE Underground, a youth-centric enclave known for its art market shops. This gig will also probably be the last time you can check out this venue for a while, as it will be undergoing renovations in the second half of 2022.

So before it goes, spikyfruits invites you to an April Fool’s evening of live music from some of the scene’s brightest. You have RENE who’s been landing blows as a hook-heavy, pop-rock contender. There’s the mountainous sound of the Saints Amongst Sinners septet who piece together alt-rock with psychedelic and shoegaze edges. And then you have acts whom we featured on our Rising Arp series – the “friendship-core” shenanigans of garage-rock/emo newcomers, Carpet Golf; and the glossy flights of electronica-synthwave producer, Sun Cell.

As of 10 March, spikyfruits has announced that they will be releasing a second wave of tickets after its first wave got snapped up in a jiffy. These fresh tickets will go out on 11 March at 8pm, so don’t miss the boat.
