It just keeps getting better for live gigs in the 65. The stages have been coming alive again with shows from homegrown labels, hip-hop musicians, and even arts festivals. Now, another one is about to swoop back to its nest at Pasir Panjang Power Station, the gargantuan site that played host to festivals like the Alex Blake Charlie Sessions. Organised by the same crew, 24OWLS, the Flock at The Nest series returns on 25 March with an artiste signed under its sister Artist Agency, 19SixtyFive. It will spread its wings once more with a performance by Mervin Wong, whom you might also know as an act we raved about last year – Planeswalker.

Under his real name, the producer and sound artist will embark on an escapade that utilises the industrial space around him. Musically, he is known for his cinematic ambient soundscapes that employ classical tones shaped by violin and viola, and electronic foundations that meander between serene and aggressive textures. Performing material from his latest EP, Akasha – originally presented as a live listening experience with multi-disciplinary artists, Joshua Tirados Suarez and Sarah Isabelle Tan – Mervin now amplifies the scale of this cross-world collaboration. His sounds will resonate between installations designed by the two artists, spanning modular garments and concrete sculptures.

“I felt air, the ether, or sound was the unspoken element that threaded through the fabrics and the concrete,” Mervin elaborates on the collaboration. “I felt this was something substantial within me that I wanted to share with the world, hence the intention of releasing Akasha as an EP. More than producing and composing, the act of performance is one that is crucial to how I feel about telling a story or an experience. I intend to translate the essence of the EP into a live performance that transports listeners on this journey.”

Mervin Wong’s performance for Flock at The Nest is the third edition of the series. Its inaugural show kicked off in October 2020 as a live-stream, featuring Benjamin Kheng, lewloh and Marian Carmel. The second instalment roped in Aisyah Aziz, Lorong Boys and Nathan Hartono for a Christmas special.
