Sound the alarm and raise the shields – the electronic pandemonium of Microchip Terror is back to wreak more havoc. When we last checked in with the metal-trained producer and mad scientist (you can scan through our interview feature) Microchip Terror had just conjured the madness of his album, Illegal Experiments 2. Two years later, he’s now rewired his circuitry to unleash a style that he dubs “electronic body horror music”, embodied in his new manic EP, REFORMAT.

Much like a gory slasher flick, the five-track collection maims and slices with its destructive offence. It retains much of Microchip Terror’s signature darksynth aesthetic, while borrowing elements from other harsh genres like industrial techno and breakcore. Once again, it’s not for the faint-hearted, but Microchip Terror’s shock tactics are here to stay.

Instantly, you’ll hear him adopting these new influences in the opening track, “Welcome To Your New Machine”, layering a four-on-the-floor kick with ravey skyward hooks, galloping synth notes, and sinister processed vocals that sound like they’re oozing out of a demon-possessed computer. On “Destroy Yourself With The Ultimate Body Hammer” (gotta love these titles), the musical alchemist deploys a pounding destructoid with eerie atmospherics and penetrating, bullet-like instrumentation. And on “Eraser” – which also has a remix by K503 on the EP – the tempo is slowed down to a more menacing pace; a trail of calculated carnage armed with murderous riffs.

“This time, the villainous doctor has been destroyed… with the ultimate body hammer,” he campily describes the album. Yet while he’s purportedly slayed his former iteration, this new reboot of Microchip Terror is still as fearsome and ferocious as ever.
