There are few opportunities to witness a thriving champion of Singaporean music history like this. Instead of being a distant memory or dormant in the archives, Leslie Low chooses to keep the cogs turning, oiling the motion of a career that took flight during the city’s alt-rock zeitgeist of the ’90s. Whether you’re a fan of the icon’s pivotal role in Humpback Oak and The Observatory, or his stacked solo catalogue etched across the decades, there’s no doubting the singer-songwriter’s contributions to the industry he helped build. It’s only fitting, that for his 35th year in music, Leslie is getting a milestone concert backed by fellow peers and institutions.
Commemorating Leslie’s 35th year in the scene is renowned arts development platform, The Substation, that’s coincidentally ringing in its 35th year as well. Titled “Passing” – a concert that’s part of The Substation’s “Gathering Ground 2025” anniversary series – this event presents a deep dive into Leslie’s influential discography spanning multiple albums exploring shades of soft rock, alt-rock, folk and other experimental pursuits.
“Leslie Low's songs are like love letters to Singapore; and this concert, in a way, is our love letter to the artist and community,” shares Yuni Hadi, Co-chairperson of The Substation (Credit: Elizabeth Low)
Held at the Esplanade Recital Studio for one night only on 10 August, “Passing” addresses Leslie’s disparate phases in life, touching on themes like adulthood, unemployment, pandemic-induced stasis and ‘the Singapore experience’ from his revered perspective. On stage, Leslie will be joined by equally respected guests, Sean Lam (Concave Scream, Hanging Up The Moon) and Alexius Cai (Piblokto).
There arguably wouldn’t be any Singaporean alternative scene without the ingenuity of Leslie Low and the vision of The Substation. Now you can get to be a part of both these legacies in this double celebration.
