Never mind vino and a swanky rooftop bar. These event organisers are celebrating kopi and local storied establishments. Kopicats are the new felines on the block, and they’re adding a refreshing twist to day parties with their novel format. If rocking up at a coffeeshop and listening to funk and soul DJ sets sounds like your cup of tea (or kopi-o siew dai), keep your tabs on their nomadic pop-ups.

The antics of Kopicats are a breath of fresh air for a couple of reasons. Given the scarcity of venues in our scene, it’s intriguing how they’ve managed to convince their selected institutions to host their parties. Kopicats have organised two events so far – one at Tong Ah Eating House, a renowned coffeeshop in Keong Saik that’s been running since 1939; and Basheer Graphic Books, a beloved bookstore that’s been operating in Bras Basah Complex for over 30 years. Kopicats also enthusiastically share the stories of their chosen venues in their social assets, bridging the gap between younger audiences and these longstanding stores.

With their emphasis on coffee, Kopicats are also rejigging the party experience by encouraging sobriety as opposed to getting sloshed on booze. They offer a transient period of daytime relaxation, backed by its resident DJ crew of Moonpiercer and dzorder who spin a serene medley of selections that range from bossa nova and jazz to r&b and soul. Not every party has to be about dancing. With Kopicats, you’re welcome to just kick back and kopi.

Kopicats refer to themselves as the Masters of the Mid-afternoon. And with what they’ve concocted, they truly might be on to something.
