Conformity – the safe-skewed status quo of people living in Singapore, but the bane of a club culture that favours free expression and liberation. Can the two coexist, or remain in conflict like water and oil? Despite its conservative nature, the city’s managed to be a breeding ground for all sort of surprising subcultures, even the ones that notoriously happen behind closed doors. Indeed if you know where to look, you’ll find a fair share of kink parties in the gig circuit slapping on the hedonistic theme like a whip on a bum.

Dressing the part is key to fitting into these debaucherous dins. Echoing the dress codes you’ll find in fetish clubs around the world, these parties encourage everything from zentai outfits and bondage hoods to dominatrix uniforms and steampunk costumes. Lace, leather and lingerie – it’s practically the Wild West at these gatherings. In fact showing up in average clothing is usually prohibited, as a means to create a safe and inclusive space for all adventurous attendees. These parties even give clear instructions on recommended dress codes, so no one shows up without catching the memo. It’s also pertinent to highlight that these events are queer-friendly, and sometimes come prepared with cloak rooms so you can dress up (or down) at the venue itself. Oh and no photos, as if that wasn’t obvious.

Currently one of the flagship party series of MOMO Asia (Mystery Of Missing Out) – co-captained by Durio from ATTAGIRL! – TABOO has summoned its kinky creatures for two editions now with a soundtrack spotlight on house music. It also has collaborations with fetish-inclined businesses, so you can do some pre-party shopping for some salacious garb.

DoMeKinky! by ArtBeyond.asia
Inspired by the Berlin playgrounds of KitKat and Berghain, this series has been somewhat of a hush-hush phenomenon with its string of kink parties over the years. With a focus on techno and house, DoMeKinky! parties have showcased a roster of local selectors and international DJs from Germany such as Bianka Banks and Hidden Empire.

HARDTHROB
The freshest bullet from the barrel is HARDTHROB, a new contender that explicitly labels itself as a queer kink rave for the sexually adventurous. It takes pride on being a sex-positive and body-positive sanctuary, and also enforces the dress code of anonymity – faces must be partially or fully covered. HARDTHROB is supported by prominent LGBTQ+ collectives, FOMOHOMO and CUM.
