The unwavering legacy of Midnight Shift has been carved deep into the scene since its launch in 2012. Beyond its primary scope as a record label – with rostermates that include global luminaries such as KiNK, Hodge and Mr. G, alongside local heroes like Xhin – the Singapore- and Berlin-based institution has plunged deep when it comes to connecting communities, notably through its myriad of events. It’s been ace in this enterprise for over a decade, with past events spanning guest performances from Answer Code Request and ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U, album launches with homegrown avant-gardists The Observatory, and more recently, a tribute concert for the cherished Eileen Chan. Through fluid and unpredictable formats, Midnight Shift events have always kept partygoers on their toes, an evergreen characteristic that segues nicely into its next chapter.

Midnight Shift Productions is the name of this next manoeuvre. More than just an event that promises a kickass party, the ambit of Midnight Shift Productions stretches a little wider. “It’s an expansion beyond the label to encompass future events that carry bolder narratives,” explains Midnight Shift co-founder, Kavan Spruyt, “dedicated to deliver a purposeful odyssey in the realm of electronic music.” Midnight Shift recognises that music events are capable of crafting curiosity and raising awareness, and for its inaugural rodeo, it’s putting forth the narrative of female empowerment in the realm of tattoo artistry.

Themed Ink & Rhythms, Midnight Shift Productions’ debut event marks a collaboration with tattoo establishment, Stay Sharp Mutha Puaka. Happening at MDLR on 1 September, the multi-disciplinary affair will feature nine female tattoo artists offering a spectrum of different styles and techniques. These include the works of Brandi, Gracia, Iwani M, Jazzle, Josephine, Moo, Rae, R3bellia and Sarahann, and they’ll be available for viewing or – if you wish – as a memento on your skin. These tattoo sessions will run from 5pm to 10pm, set against a backdrop of spun selections that carry on into the night.

Headlining the all-day soundtrack of left-field electronica, techno, house and other alternative cuts is Powder, the Japanese maverick and Beats In Space alumna who’s become a global powerhouse in recent years. Jeremy Cheung, another regional addition, joins the lineup from Hong Kong with his seasoned and astute repertoire. And from our shores we’ve got a mix of veterans and new names to watch, with an ensemble of Dexter Colt, Jenn Chunes, Leland, and Midnight Shift’s very own – and mysteriously marketed – Working Title that will be dropping a hybrid set.

Whether it’s a piece of art on your body or an earworm in your skull, you’ll be bringing home a memory or two from this new questline of Midnight Shift.
