From Baybeats to Heineken, the resurgence of live music in Singapore has brought back a volley of beloved music events like chariots on parade. Finally joining this glorious wave is the full-fledged return of Fred Perry Subculture, the signature gig series of the clothing label that’s coloured the scene over the years.

Following two consecutive editions of rocking in the digital realm, the series is now busting out of the screen for a physical show on 16 November at Room 0416, a multi-functional hideout sequestered in the urban labyrinth of Golden Mile Complex. Popping up in unconventional locations has always been a defining quirk of Fred Perry Subculture. The series boasts a track record of curveball gig destinations, from abandoned basketball courts and futsal parks, to its last live iteration in 2019 when it took over the arts-skewed enclave of DECK. Seems like long ago, doesn't it?

The 2022 edition of the series lights the torch of local music yet again with an ensemble that includes homegrown trailblazers. Slated for the bill are folk-pop singer-songwriter lewloh with poignant heart-on-sleevers, emo radicals Forests with their volatile riot-starters, and drifty noise-rockers Subsonic Eye with their dreamy artillery. There will also be a DJ set from EMONIGHTSG, known for their trigger-happy repertoire of emo and alt-rock anthems.

And just like other Fred Perry live events, music won’t be the only attraction. Cocktails will be whipped up by Enclave Bar, an edgy speakeasy that’s also been stirring some buzz in the Golden Mile territory. There will be a photography showcase featuring local icons and innovators shot by Ashok Kumar. And as an added bonus, all attendees to Fred Perry Subculture will also receive complimentary entry to EMONIGHTSG: The B-Sides at 50 Cuscaden Road, the official after-party of the event.

Go off the grain and deviate from the pack. The Subculture is yours to define.
