Consistency is key if you wanna earn long-term credibility in the scene, and Dexter Colt’s racked up plenty. Respected as one of the circuit’s more established figures with his seasoned tenure, Dexter Colt has been blazing through the ranks with more than just his selector prowess (it’s why he invited him for our 15-Min Flash Mix series), but also his magnetic pull as a producer. His works are culminations of his multifaceted experiences in the industry, notably his artistic ties with Darker Than Wax and more recently, Super Enjoy, which he is a member of. But beyond our shores, Dexter Colt continues his meteoric ascension, and we’re seeing it again with the drop of his new EP.

Released on the Los Angeles-based dance label, Low Recordings, is Penthouse Trax, Dexter Colt’s latest four-track foray that displays a skillset that’s sharpened and tempered. It bears an acute maturity that doesn’t go overboard in intensity, yet still engineered with enough moving parts to stir a dancefloor in any part of the world. Penthouse Trax is the producer’s third EP, showcasing a steady pattern of growth from his debut offering unveiled just last year.

Penthouse Trax is positioned as a reflection of Dexter Colt’s diverse influences, and it shows in the character and sequence of these tracks that span the fields of house, deep house, minimal and breakbeat. “Smoked Out” starts off the record with its bubbling basslines and gossamer chords, coming in like a rejuvenating mist you breathe in at daybreak. “Calendar Potential” keeps things housey with plush kicks and analogue toms, propelled by an arpeggiated stutter that punctuates the rhythm and terrain-sweeping synths. “Hiding In My Apartment” is an isolated loungey affair that doesn’t derail the momentum with muted breakbeats, and “Dreamz” is aptly hypnotic while serving as the album’s gliding, glimmering coda.
