The rapping human vegetable has peeled off another layer from his sprouting repertoire. Endearingly known for his costumed persona and bizarre antics, BGourd has also proven himself to be a formidable contender in the Singaporean hip-hop scene.

He has freshly released “Whack”, the newest tease to come off his latest album, Veggie Wraps, Vol. 3. The single features production from partner in crime, Beansprouts, who co-hosts his madcap live sets on Singapore Community Radio. It also sees BGourd reuniting with Fauxe on executive production duties after their collaboration on Vol. 2, with Halal Sol previously steering the ship on Vol. 1. Weighing in at just under two minutes, “Whack” begins with a quirky lo-fi groove before erupting in a charging rock arrangement with post-punk hues, deviating from past material with more traditional hip-hop formats.

Vocally, BGourd displays refreshing versatility amidst the musical hubbub, experimenting with range and delivery as he whips up his signature blend of leisurely, free-flowing rhymes. “Get high on your likes / Just ride with the views / Save time on news / And your thoughts go askew,” he exclaims like a social preacher, dropping truths without losing his gall. The whole song is utterly unusual, but by now, you should expect nothing less from BGourd.
