Being part of the electronic music scene isn’t a fleeting fad, but a lifestyle choice. Just ask unwavering pioneers like Donovan Wong, who’s been an integral sculptor of the scene since the ’90s, pushing local bloc and rooftop parties and co-steering the hallowed Kinemat collective that fuelled the rise of underground electronic music in Singapore. Donovan – who also DJs as Donn – has always been a figure of vision, and it led to him building his network and reputation beyond our small Singapore pond and forging a base in Shanghai. Given his position, he’s essentially a man who understands Asia’s role in the electronic music industry, and that acuity has culminated in the growth of Bassis Asia as we know it today.

Bassis Asia represents a nexus of activities, but in its current iteration, it’s an agency organising event activations, and handles artist booking and representation and tours in Asia. Despite starting in Singapore, Donovan has now amassed a cosmopolitan roster of international and regional names with his pull, with Bassis artists including Ecilo, Space Dimension Controller, Closet Yi, Roska, Scuba, Kush Jones, Brandt Bauer Frick and Singapore’s own Aldrin. It’s an all-star ensemble that’s stretched the Bassis imprint in cities and venues all across Asia, and without forgetting his roots, Donovan’s ensured that’s he giving plenty back home. Indeed the Singapore scene is benefitting once again from Donovan’s generosity and ingenuity, and we see this coming to light in Bassis’ upcoming 10-year anniversary tour.

Titled “Bass10X Anniversary”, this ambitious Bassis initiative is set to organise multiple party events all over Asia in the coming months, with Singapore being no exception. On 6 June, Bassis heralds the return of CONVERGENCE, collaborating with d&b audiotechnik for an intimate industrial takeover powered by 360° Soundscape spatial technology. The gig is headlined by the futuristic machine music of Space Dimension Controller, supported by Strange Weather’s ITEK and ambient savant Kin Leonn for swirling and unfurling soundscapes.

Several more events are simmering in the pipeline as well. 27 June sees a Bassis and Sivilian Affairs crossover at RASA, headlined by South Korea’s Radio Revolution (former music director of The Air House Festival) and supported by Shanghai’s Ray Kong and our very own Sivanesh – we hear it’s gonna be an all-vinyl set. And on 11 July, Sivilian Affairs teams up with Bassis again to showcase more of the latter’s international portfolio with a special performance from the Berlin-based Huerta, label honcho of LEIZURE and purveyor of left-field cuts spanning house, breakbeat and downtempo. There’s even talks of a live-stream activation happening at Choice Cuts Pizza & Records on 13 July, transforming the Joo Chiat hangout into a buzzy day party hubbub.

The Bassis 10-year anniversary tour naturally goes beyond our shores with events in Shanghai, Chengdu, Bangkok, and Tokyo. But it’s heartening to still see Singapore get a substantial slice of that Bassis pie, and you can thank Donovan and his team for that. A true advocate of the scene never forgets where they came from.
