Community is the thread that binds the scene tightly. Beyond the beats and bright lights, a good party is defined by its inclusivity, jovial vibes, and camaraderie amongst its patrons. In all my years of revelling, few events tick these boxes for me as positively as Good Times.

Known chiefly for its enduring residency at Blu Jaz Café that lasted years, Good Times attracted a loyal following and eclectic programming. Going into Good Times was like prancing on a Roulette wheel, never knowing what you might land on. Constantly surprising with its oft-changing ensemble of selectors, Good Times shared its decks with ambassadors from myriad collectives in the scene, including Darker Than Wax, Syndicate, ATTAGIRL!, Phyla Digital and more. The ensuing soundtrack would be a hearty hodgepodge of genres, possibly cartwheeling from left-field hip-hop numbers to footwork jaunts busting the 160BPM barrier (Toto’s “Africa” was a beloved staple, too).

Fundamentally, Good Times served as a crash course for anyone keen on exploring the underground scene in the 2010s. All they had to do was show up with an open mind.

In the same vein, the next long-awaited rendition of Good Times – on 8 March – is one that features yet another mixed crew on the decks. Slipping out a soundtrack of old-school hip-hop is the lineup of Uploading founder, Intriguant (you can read our interview feature with him), and Revision Music bigwigs, Rah and Senja. The latter two will be embarking on a sojourn out of Singapore soon, so catch them in action while you can.

Always full of surprises, Good Times is also unveiling this new series at a fairly new waterhole in Keong Saik called No Sleep Club. Already a hit amongst cocktail connoisseurs, the attention-grabbing venue (also a creative studio) will play host to the party antics of Good Times, and it’s a configuration that’s bound to arouse curiosity within the scene.

No Sleep Times is not really an emergence of any sort – list it down as another dope collab I get to do with lovely friends, which is the essence of Good Times anyways,” says respected Good Times co-founder, Eric Foenander. “No Sleep Club approached me and Nez [Senja] and Rah from Revision Music to do something fun, and we obviously ran with it. Also, the party is an unofficial send-off for Nez and Rah as they make their big move to Melbourne.”

No Sleep Times: Great Food, Drinks & Beats, 8 March 2020, 3pm-10pm, No Sleep Club, 20 Keong Saik Road, Singapore 089127. Entry is free.
