Day Parties In Singapore That Will Have You Back By Suppertime

As I get older, partying till the wee hours of the night takes a bigger toll on me. The hangovers last longer, the harsh morning after realistically starts past lunchtime, and adjusting my body clock to that of a normal human being becomes dreadful. Will I stop? Probably not, but I sure wouldn’t mind boogieing in the daylight every now and then. Hit up a vibe-y hangout, glug a craft beer or two, sway to crisp choons and be back home for supper – doesn’t sound too shabby, does it?

If you share my sentiment, and I know many of you do, here’s a list of recommended day parties in Singapore that often throw shindigs in either fixed venues or pop-up locations. From Sunday family-friendly events to sunset wind-downs, these parties are pushing a trend that I hope takes off.

Ice Cream Sundays

We all scream for ice cream, and sure enough, Ice Cream Sundays has been a scene phenomenon that punters have developed an appetite for since 2016. Purveyors and perfectors of rollicking day parties, Ice Cream Sundays is a collective that throws jovial fiestas for partygoers who don’t want to take themselves too seriously. The sunny soundtrack often comprises elements of disco, house, funk, soul and hip-hop, all dished out by an unpredictable motley crew of Ice Cream Sunday residents, guest DJs and local labels like Darker Than Wax. What I personally love about Ice Cream Sunday jaunts is that you never know where it’s going to pop up next. It’s sprung near a forest in Dempsey, it’s unified crowds at art venues like National Gallery Singapore and DECK, and it’s even taken over condominiums and rooftops. But wherever they go, one thing remains consistent – they do Sundays right.

Sundown Sundays at Potato Head Singapore

In the renowned Potato Head Beach Club Bali, day parties are a norm. So why shouldn’t its Singapore counterpart follow suit? While it lacks the beach and sea, Potato Head Singapore exhibits an equally charming locale with its edgy rooftop space in the vibrant Keong Saik neighbourhood. Starting as early as 5pm (till 10pm), the weekly Sundown Sundays series feeds your craving for daytime dancing with tropical beats, downtempo grooves and other chilled-out tunage. But that’s not the only nourishment you get from Sundown Sundays; with a free-flow of house-pour spirits, Aperol and Campari spritzers, and freshly-grilled chicken skewers, your hunger for a perfect Sunday will be more than satisfied.

Smack My Beach Up at Tanjong Beach Club

After a hardcore Saturday night getting loose in the city, Sundays call for a reprieve from urban life – and what an escape this provides. Since 2011, Smack My Beach Up has been the flagship party series of the prominent Tanjong Beach Club. While the trip to Sentosa is undoubtedly tedious, the seaside destination makes the journey worth it with its daybeds, pool, and scrumptious food and cocktail menu. Every Sunday, Smack My Beach Up reels in revellers like a beachy Pied Piper, with a soundtrack consisting of Balearic house, and what they like to call “sunshine soul” and “horizontal disco”. While the series has hosted international elites like Aeroplane and Gigamesh in the past, it keeps the legacy going strong with some of the best local selectors you’ll find on the island.

Brew at Chye Seng Huat Hardware

What’s the recipe for a well-churned party? Count on Singaporean label, Darker Than Wax, to have the formula down pat. Always bubbling with effervescent vibes and stirring with a diverse, street-savvy community, the label’s Brew series has been a hit along the avenue of Jalan Besar since 2017. With its home at hip coffee joint, Chye Seng Huat Hardware, the alfresco party often features members of the imprint, spinning an eclectic melange of disco, funk, house, hip-hop, Afrobeat, soul and more. “The spirit of Brew is about inclusivity, open-mindedness, and debunking urban myths,” Dean Chew (AKA Funk Bast*rd) shares with us, “breaking categories and rejuvenating the very basic idea of interpersonal connection.”

Sunday On The Hill at Kult Kafe

Weekend warriors of yesteryear will surely remember a jolly party series called Sunday At The Training Shed, organised by the Sideshow collective. But since 2016, the relocated party’s ditched the Training Shed name for now, and has brazenly embraced its new address at Kult Kafe. The name might be different, but it retains the same family-friendly (and dog-friendly!) charm that made the monthly jamboree such a hit. Whether you’re dancing to selections of soul, Latin and Afrobeat, chilling on the lawn with a craft beer and gourmet sausages, or unleashing the kiddos upon the event’s garden games, you’ll be put at ease by the unpretentiousness and slow-paced vigour of this laid-back get-together.

Assorted events at Camp Kilo Charcoal Club

Nighttime ravers would be fully acquainted with Kilo Lounge’s weekend parties. But for the daytime dwellers, they’d be better off swinging by the former’s sister restaurant, Camp Kilo Charcoal Club. With its casual alfresco setting and mouth-watering BBQ treats available (the nosh here is perfect hangover food, trust me), it’s easy to see why this venue is a ripe pick for promoters to throw their Sunday parties. And that’s why it’s hard to pick just one for this list.

You have the TRIBE x Music Market by Revision Music, which transforms the space into a vinyl marketplace soundtracked by jungle, jazz and other day-friendly ditties. Sunday Social Market is yet another all-day get-together with house tunes, artisanal trinkets, interior decor and fashion accessories.. You have the After Dawn: BBQ Block Party series which gives DJs a chance to change gears, while curating a mini fiesta of market stalls, workshops and games. Not to mention, seasonal happenings like Soul Vibe Sundays and the pooch-friendly Camp Canine for your dancing doggo. Is this the most delightful place to be on Sundays? It just might be.
